At certain times in our country’s life, political concerns capture our attention. This campaign season is one of those eras. And the Bible holds some instructive words for leaders in the church, businesses, families, neighborhoods, and other contexts, including governments.
Psalm 72 provides such words, petitioning God to bless the king with justice. That justice belongs to and comes from God. It’s more than revenge, and it’s more than giving criminals “what’s coming to them.” The psalm describes justice as defense of the afflicted, salvation of children in need, defeat of oppression (“the oppressor”), and rescue from violence.
Let us seek leaders who embody that kind of justice, and let us find ways to live out God’s justice in our own spheres of influence.
