Here begins a chaotic list of kings. A few are good; most are not. Today’s reading shows us Abijah, Asa, Nadab, Baasha, Elah, Zimri, Omri, and the infamous Ahab. The story of Asa, the one good king in chapters 15 and 16, teaches us to be fully devoted to God and to do all the good we can.

That’s an important lesson for all, particularly leaders, especially in the church. We mustn’t let our personal ambitions or fears limit our devotion to the Lord. We need to maintain consistent practice of spiritual disciplines like prayer, Bible reading, meditation, and so forth. We need to stay focused on God’s mission of healing and reconciliation, and we must remain humble.
