Living for God occasionally requires civil disobedience. Examples from the twentieth century include Dorothy Day, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Mohandas Gandhi. Examples in the Bible include the midwives of Exodus 1.
Those of us who seek always to honor God may at times need to disobey other authorities. We shouldn’t deny this necessity, but we also must not too quickly assume that civil disobedience is our best option in a particular situation. Let us approach such dilemmas with prayer, thought, and care, seeking guidance, strength, and courage from God.
